Web Sites of the Month: Poker 101

April 2006 Successful Meetings Magazine

Your attendees are much more likely to enjoy gaming destinations if they know how to play a couple of games. Check out these sites to learn to play poker.

Party Hearty
www.partypoker.net
Under the “Learn to Play” tab, PartyPoker.net provides a lot of instructional material, including extremely in-depth information on five variations of poker: Texas Hold ’em, Omaha High, Omaha 8-or-Better, Seven-Card Stud, and Stud 8-or-Better. Each section includes details on each round of the game, standard rules, and exceptions. PartyPoker.net also offers downloadable software for those interested in trying their hand at computer poker.

Be a Star
www.pokerstars.net
Even if you choose not to download the free software to play, PokerStars.net still offers a lot of valuable information, including basics such as what it means to check, fold, call, and raise; ranking of hands; game limits, and a poker glossary. The site features detailed descriptions of some of the most popular poker games: Texas Hold ’em, Omaha, Omaha High-Low, Seven-Card Stud, and Seven-Card Stud High-Low. It’s enough to get you through a few rounds at the table, or at least to understand the tournaments on ESPN.

Poker Face
www.soyouwanna.com/site/syws/poker/poker.html
The SoYouWanna site tells visitors how to do anything: Feng Shui your house or learn the basics of HTML. Their So You Wanna Learn to Play Poker page is divided into five sections: Understand the cards and their values, Learn the basic rules of the game, Know the lingo, Bet smart, and Learn some variations of the game. The site’s irreverent tone is balanced by useful information, simple descriptions, and a know-when-to-quit message.
