MeCo Counters Attrition, Connects Meeting Professionals with Vacant Room Blocks

The Meetings Community, a virtual community for meeting planners and suppliers known as MeCo, is helping its members avoid hotel attrition charges by giving them the opportunity to advertise and fill vacant room blocks, it announced recently.

Provided they have the express permission of their host hotel, meeting planners who have unused room blocks—due to either cancellation or diminished attendance—can use a new, special form on the MeCo Web site in order to advertise unused rooms to industry colleagues, who can in turn take advantage of the advertiser's discounted room rates and therefore help the advertiser avoid costly hotel attrition charges. The form is located online at www.meetingscommunity.org/rooms.htm.

"This new MeCo feature is of incredible value to anyone who is seeking unique deals," Andrea Gold, president of Gold Stars Speakers Bureau and MeCo associate moderator, said in a statement. "It's a win-win situation for everyone. The meeting planner who must cancel wins, the person looking for those rooms at a great price wins and the property wins because there is no room block cancellation."

MeCo created its new room block-sharing concept—which is free to both planners and properties—in response to its members, who expressed great interest in having a forum through which to advertise unfilled room blocks, and who cite attrition as one of the most common meetings industry challenges.
