On page 51 you'll find a piece by Destinations Editor Terri Hardin predicting that commercial space travel could be a billion-dollar industry in 20 years. That's all well and good, but it's already five years behind schedule. When I was eight years old in 1968, Stanley Kubrick promised me that space tourism would be well underway by 2001. Most of 2001: A Space Odyssey bored me silly, but I vividly remember the depiction of Pan Am offering zero-gravity trips to a space station orbiting the moon in the film's presentation of life in the first year of this millennium. Come to think of it, Stanley was wrong about the future of Pan Am too. I guess getting it all wrong just goes with the territory when you do long-term forecasting (even Nostradamus made predictions that were off by a decade or so). For predictions a bit closer to our era, turn to page 31 where Senior Writer Kinley Levack takes a look at what the future of resorts will be in the next few years. Her piece explores trends in a wide variety of areas affecting resorts, such as branding, site selection, and room amenities, to name just a few. Whatever the future brings to the resort niche, one thing is certain: It's going to cost more money to hold meetings at these properties, and right now no matter where a group is meeting, be it a resort or a downtown property, planners are looking at a seller's market. In our cover story, beginning on page 26, Senior Editor Sara Welch uncovers negotiating strategies that can help planners get the best deals in these tough times. Speaking of good deals, if you've held a meeting at a resort or hotel this year where the facility was spectacular and the service was great, turn to page 44 and include the property in the 2006 Pinnacle Award Rankings. You can also submit rankings online at www.MiMegasite.com. Beginning this year, instead of just selecting a property from a list, you can rank the nominees in four categories. The deadline for rankings for the 2006 awards is March 1, 2006. But planners can continue to rank properties online after that to create an up-to-the-minute, real-time ranking of suppliers that will run throughout the year.
