CVBs' Threefer Madness

Could it be spring fever? The month of May saw the departure of not one but three CVB chiefs: Manny Cortez of the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority (LVCVA), Lisa Haller of the Greater Cincinnati Convention & Visitors Bureau, and Michael Hollander of New York's Long Island Convention & Visitors Bureau (LICVB).

Cortez, president and CEO of the LVCVA since 1991, announced his retirement on May 4, literally to the tune of Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler." (Referring to his 35-year career, Cortez quipped, "You've got to know when to fold 'em."). He leaves this month with successor Rossi Ralenkotter, formerly executive vice president, in place.

In contrast to that straightforward handover, Haller and Hollander leave their positions with no designated successors. Haller, who officiated at the groundbreaking of the Cincinnati Convention Center expansion in April, left in May after a two-year tenure; Hollander, having headed the LICVB for seven years, left last month to become partner and executive vice president at Long Island Hotels LLC. Both CVBs have board members acting as interim CEOs, which they say gives them time to find the right candidate.
