A Brief Spa 'Menu'

Deep muscle massage, Swedish massage, facials, aromatherapy, and reflexology are the top five most popular spa treatments chosen by meeting and incentive groups according to the International Spa Association. Following is a brief description of each. For more detailed information, go to the glossary on the International Spa Association’s web site at www.experienceispa.com.

Deep muscle massage
This massage technique separates muscle groups to bring about the realignment of the body. It incorporates a deep kneading of the muscles. Although it is possible to ask the massage therapist to lighten up the pressure he or she is using, some still find this type of massage uncomfortable. Proponents say they feel relaxed afterward and some even claim it improves posture but it’s not for everyone.

Swedish massage
Swedish massage is the best-known type of massage. It is used to improve circulation, ease muscle aches and tension, improve flexibility, and create relaxation. An authentic Swedish massage incorporates long strokes, kneading of the muscles, tapping, rolling, and in some cases, aromatherapy oils to help the massage therapist’s hands glide.

Facials
A standard facial cleanses, tones, exfoliates, and moisturizes and many even include a massage of the face. The desired outcome of most facials is to help repair and prevent free radical damage caused by environmental exposure.

Aromatherapy
Essential oils are used during massages and facials. Some of the most popular aromas include lavender, chamomile, and eucalyptus.

Reflexology
This ancient Chinese technique using pressure point massage on the feet helps   restore the flow of energy throughout the body. It’s all about balance and that’s one of the most important aspects of any spa experience, balancing the mind, body, and spirit.
