It's Better to Give ...

When the economy is in bad shape, charities suffer as much as, if not more than, other organizations. But we're also a generous bunch; charitable giving in the United States was an estimated $306.39 billion in 2007, according to the Giving USA Foundation. The Foundation attributes the high number—over $300 billion for the first time ever—to the performance of the stock market in the first half of 2007, growth of the gross domestic product, and increases in corporate and personal income.

Clearly we are in a different place heading into the 2008 holiday season, which makes this an even better time to help someone less fortunate, as the mortgage crisis, job losses, and a depressed stock market will make this a less joyous season. Many hotels have gotten in the game and serve as drop-off locations, hosts, or supporters of various charitable efforts. Here is a small sample of what's being done by some of the properties you may use as host hotels.

Fit to Be Tied

Drop off a pair of gently worn or new sneakers at any Fairmont hotel in North America January 19-23, to be donated to Soles4Souls, which distributes the shoes to people in need. Donors will receive a discount card for 15 percent off adidas merchandise as a thank-you for their contribution. Fairmont will also be donating sneakers from its Fairmont Fit program, through which guests can use athletic apparel during their stay.

Bank On It

As part of Marriott Hotels' "Spirit to Serve" Global Community Initiative, the Raleigh Marriott City Center has erected a giving tree adorned with ornaments, any one of which is for sale for $15, with 100 percent of proceeds going to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. The tree will be up through Christmas, and the hotel's Bar Posta will donate $1 from the sale of specialty holiday cocktails to the food bank. You can also make donations directly to that food bank, or consider donating to one in your area.

Get To the Point

Hilton Hotels Corporation allows HHonors members to donate their points to 24 causes, ranging from the World Wildlife Fund to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to Habitat for Humanity. Donations are made in blocks of 10,000 points, which equal a $25 contribution. This is a great way for a group to give back to an organization that has special meaning to them without breaking the bank.
