How to Overcome Employers' Negative Stereotypes About Millennials

How to Advance Your Career

If you're a Millennial who's in the market for a new job, it might feel like the cards are stacked against you. After all, your older peers -- the folks who are likely making hiring decisions -- don't exactly hold your generation in the highest regard. Millennials, they insist, are entitled, lazy, self-centered and sensitive. And who wants to hire someone like that?

No one, of course. But that doesn't mean your job search is doomed. On the contrary. In truth, employers will be lining up to recruit you, regardless of your age -- provided you know how to successfully counter their negative stereotypes.

One easy way to do so in job interviews is to use the word "we," says Glassdoor contributor Amy Elisa Jackson.

"According to [millennial career expert Jill Jacinto], 'employers want to know that you are a team player and can easily fit into their culture,'" Jackson reports. "This may be especially important to prove as a millennial, often thought of as selfish and impulsive. So, during an interview, 'as you answer their questions, literally say we as opposed to I so that you already sound like you are part of the team.'"

Also: Avoid asking questions about how the employer can help you and instead ask questions about how you can help the employer.

"This is not the time to ask about vacation days, working weekends, salary or a bonus," Jacinto tells Jackson. "These questions should be asked after you have been offered the job … [Instead] use the small window of time you have with a hiring manger to ask strategic questions that show your worth as a candidate and that promote your skill set."
