People often compare careers to ladders. As you're climbing yours, it's logical to think about not only the next rung, but also the highest rung, to which the ladder ultimately leads. For many people, that's a corner office in the C-suite.
But not everyone will win a coveted job in leadership. If you want to be one of the lucky few who does, you'll need to think -- and act -- strategically, author Kate Ashford suggests in an article for job search website Monster.
"Landing that C-suite position -- or another upper-level title you're coveting -- isn't impossible," Ashford says. "You just have to put in the work. That means being clear about your goals and being willing to bring your A-game, because at this level, plenty of employees are doing good things. You have to stand out from the pack."
Step one is sharing your goals, business coach Stacy Caprio tells Ashford. "The first step is to make your desire for a promotion known. Express your desire to move upward into a leadership or other position to those who have the decision-making power," she says. "If they never know you want to move up in that way, they may think you're content where you are."
You also should begin building a leadership profile, which you can do by speaking at conferences, authoring white papers, leading committees, writing thought-leadership articles, etc.
"If you can't do these things in your current role, look to industry associations or your local chamber of commerce for opportunities," advises Ashford, who also recommends seeking the advice of a mentor, leveraging the services of a career coach, and pursuing new training and education opportunities. "The more you can present yourself as someone who's ready for the next step, the more likely you are to be seen and tagged for the right role."
