How to Give Yourself an Edge During Job Interviews

How to Advance Your Career

If you're wondering what you can do during a job interview to beat out your competition, the answer is easy, according to CheatSheet contributor Sheiresa Ngo: Be friendly and upbeat.

"Being likable is … important when interviewing for a job. If it comes down to two candidates, a hiring manager is more likely to choose the candidate with a positive attitude," Ngo says. "So if you're normally a Debbie Downer, now is the time to get your attitude in check."

According to Brad Stultz, human resources coordinator at Totally Promotional, friendly candidates aren't just more likeable; they also are more likely to be better team players.

"When making the final selection between two candidates, the personality and general demeanor of a candidate can be the two factors that push one ahead of the other," he tells Ngo. "These two factors can be a true testament to whether or not an employee will integrate well into the culture of an organization."
