A majority of travelers use social media, although very few use it to gather travel-related information, finds the latest travelhorizons survey from Ypartnership and the U.S. Travel Association.Conducted in October 2009 and released this week, the survey of 2,200 U.S. adults found that nearly 6 out of 10 (59 percent) active travelers have visited a social networking site such as Facebook (approximately 50 percent) or MySpace (approximately 25 percent).Travelers' most popular social networking activities are uploading photos/videos (49 percent), rating products or services (46 percent), visiting chat rooms (25 percent) and posting content to blogs (25 percent). When it comes to travel, just one in 10 Facebook users seeks travel advice, and just one in 20 has joined a community of users who share common travel interests. Specifically, travelers have used social networks to:• Ask advice about a destination (11 percent)• Ask advice about a travel supplier (8 percent)• Learn about travel deals (6 percent)• Get updates on destinations and travel suppliers (5 percent)• Join communities with like travel interests (5 percent)"That's today, however," Ypartnership concludes. "How quickly this may change is a matter of considerable speculation given the remarkable rate of penetration these sites have achieved in such a short period of time. Yet, for now, consumers continue to seek and respond to information about travel services and suppliers from more established offline and online media sources."
