MPI Projects More Meetings, More Spend for 2011

After a sustained period of declines, the meetings industry is poised for moderate growth this year, according to Meeting Professionals International (MPI), which yesterday released the results of its FutureWatch 2011 study, predicting modest increases in meeting volume, attendees and overall meetings spend.

According to the study — a survey of more than 450 industry professionals in 20 different countries — 2011 will see an 8 percent increase in the number of meetings planned and a 5 percent increase in average spend.

"After two challenging years for the business of our industry, we're back with FutureWatch 2011 responses indicating material real growth in activity of 8 percent." said MPI President and CEO Bruce MacMillan. "FutureWatch 2011 also indicates that this is the year where recent industry forays into virtual events and collaboration through social media will become increasingly mainstream. Thinking outside the room to drive performance through connectivity is becoming entrenched."
