The Travel Industry Association (TIA) and American Express announced yesterday that they have partnered in order to develop what they're calling the Travel Sustainability Initiative, which is a comprehensive plan designed to help the industry assure sustainability in travel and tourism.
By joining forces, TIA and American Express hope to educate public and private stakeholders alike about the benefits of sustainability within the travel industry. Together, they'll aggregate, organize and synthesize subject-relevant information, including data from existing consumer research, information on eco-friendly travel programs, overviews of proposed legislation, case studies and more.
"Our initiative with American Express is a comprehensive review of domestic and international efforts related to travel and climate change, and the larger issue of travel and the environment," Roger Dow, president and CEO of TIA, said in a statement. "This Sustainability Initiative will place emphasis on better understanding what the travel community is doing to go 'green,' where we are still vulnerable and preparing travel leaders to play a more active role in the policy-making process concerning our impact on the natural environment."
Results of the joint initiative will be distributed to industry stakeholders via a Web site that will be launched this fall at TIA's Marketing Outlook Forum.
