PCMA Auctioning Off Citywide Convention in Melbourne

A citywide convention is a massive affair -- and it's a massive expense, especially when it takes place abroad. But one lucky meeting planning team now has the opportunity to stage a citywide convention at a steal, thanks to the Professional Convention Management Association's ninth annual PCMA Citywide Auction. Featuring Australia's Melbourne Convention Bureau (MCB) and Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC), this is the first time that PCMA has chosen an international destination for its Citywide Auction.

"The initiative is a great opportunity for conference organizers to stage an event at a great price, while enjoying Melbourne's vibrant cultural scene," said MCB CEO Karen Bolinger. "Melbourne is a city celebrated for its unique [lanes], world-class restaurants, café culture, and exciting schedule of major events, all of which embody why Melbourne has been voted the 'World's Most Livable City' for five consecutive years. Most importantly, Melbourne is not only renowned as a knowledge and innovation capital, but what sets it apart is our 'Team Melbourne' philosophy -- how we bring together the city as one to drive successful outcomes for conferences and events."

The PCMA Citywide Auction is designed to raise money for high-level meetings industry education by selling to the highest bidder a citywide meeting package in a major city. Past auctions have featured packages in San Diego, Orlando, Chicago, New Orleans, and Washington, DC, among others. This year's package in Melbourne includes use of MCEC's 52 meeting rooms and 98,000 square feet of pillar-less exhibition space for up to seven days (a value of $350,000), a dedicated event manager and in-house A/V project manager, food and beverage packages, exposure on MCEC's website, the use of digital signage to promote the event, use of all pre-installed technology, and convention servicing support from MCB.

"At MCEC we have an unwavering commitment to always work with our customers to ensure that we plan and deliver world-class events while creating life-long, memorable experiences for attendees," said MCEC CEO Peter King. "Our skilled chefs create amazing food that continues to be awarded and recognized by the industry year after year and our award-winning technology is all provided in-house, with experienced and talented technicians on deck. I encourage you all to take advantage of this special opportunity and place a bid in the auction."

Bidding is currently open and closes Nov. 30, 2016, at 5 p.m. CST. Opening bids start at $125,000 and a "buy now" option is available for $150,000, which ends the auction immediately if exercised.

"The meetings community in Melbourne is extremely tight," said PCMA Global Development Director Michelle Crowley. "It is very interconnected, with a strong ambassadorship and research support from well-known Melbourne universities that would allow any global event professional to tap into the local economic knowledge specific to his or her industry."
