When it was reported this month that Irish budget airline Ryanair planned to commence service between Europe and the United States, meeting planners, exhibitors, and attendees were among the most excited travelers. As it turns out, though, they might have jumped the gun.
Citing a statement from the company, media reports last week indicated that the company's board of directors had given its OK for new transatlantic service starting at just $15 for a one-way trip, scheduled to begin around 2020. After several days of buzz, however, the company responded to news reports with the following statement:
"In the light of recent press coverage, the board of Ryanair Holdings Plc wishes to clarify that it has not considered or approved any transatlantic project and does not intend to do so."
In a follow up with the Financial Times, which broke the original story, Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary called the flub a "miscommunication."
