NBTA Holds Forum for Industry's First, Only Strategic Meeting Management Certification

The National Business Travel Association (NBTA) recently convened a special task force charged with developing the corporate travel industry's first and only certification in strategic meetings management programs (SMMP), task force sponsor and SMMP consultancy Concepts Worldwide announced this week.

"To be part of the evolution of the meetings industry is indeed a great privilege," Concepts Worldwide President and CEO Terri Breining said in a statement, "and what's even more exciting is that we're far from done in our evolution, which means there's plenty more to learn and plenty more to contribute."

Strategic meetings management—the focus of which is planning meetings with an eye toward measuring costs and improving ROI—is the next major trend within the meetings and events industry, according to Concepts Worldwide, which co-facilitated with NBTA the multi-day session with its SMMP task force. The task force, which included representatives from companies like Coca Cola, Washington Mutual and Xerox, worked to define the objectives, content and structure of an SMMP designation program, and appointed an advisory board that will guide NBTA in the creation of SMMP certification and educational programs in the coming year.
