Tumbleweed, AZ — An attendee at the recent American Society of Convention Attendees convention suffered serious injuries after getting his hand stuck in a convention center commode and has filed suit against the venue for poorly designed toilets. The Tumbleweed sheriff's office said Jules de Lou, 46, was taking a mid-afternoon meeting break at the Cameron Convention & Event Center when his wedding band fell off his finger and into the commode. Panicked, de Lou reached into the toilet but soon found that he could not pull his hand out. A fellow attendee, Mark Uribe, heard de Lou’s cries for help and notified convention center staff. The building’s management summoned for emergency help, after which a small fire department unit finally extracted de Lou after several hours. Rescue firemen wound up cracking open the bowl to free de Lou’s hand, but the distraught conventioneer’s hand suffered fractures in several places after he repeatedly tried to force it out. Last-day sessions and events at the two-day ASCA convention were canceled. Now, the ASCA attendees are demanding refunds from the San Antonio, TX-based group, which in turn is pursuing legal action with de Lou against the convention center. “I think the convention center did a grave injustice to me and all the ASCA members,” said de Lou of his injuries and the canceled sessions. “The holes in the toilet bowls are just too small. When the facility put them in, they should’ve made sure folks wouldn’t get hurt if they accidentally drop things into them and tried to pick them out.” April Fule, who planned the ASCA meeting, declined to comment to MeetingNews’ questions about the incident, only saying the association is seeking damages for lost business and de Lou’s injuries. Cameron Convention Center officials also declined to comment because of an ongoing internal investigation. Just 25 attendees descended on Tumbleweed for the group’s — and the town’s — first citywide meeting. Members of the ASCA attended the event for educational sessions and networking on how they can become better convention attendees. April Fool's!
