Thanks to increasing technology and decreasing corporate budgets, more and more non-meeting planners are planning meetings. In response, Meeting Professionals International (MPI) is expanding its professional development and live events portfolios with new offerings for non-traditional meeting professionals, such as executive assistants and other business professionals with meeting planning responsibilities, it announced yesterday.
The first of MPI's new offerings is a new "Meeting Fundamentals" certificate program that will teach participants how to create meeting blueprints, develop meeting budgets, prepare requests for proposals (RFPs), conduct site inspections, etc. Created with the support of developmental sponsor InterContinental Hotels Group and pre-approved for Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) certification credit, the program's first course will take place April 25 at MPI headquarters in Dallas.
MPI also has announced a corresponding training program to be held June 13-14 during MPI's 2016 World Education Congress (WEC) in Atlantic City, NJ. Called "Basics Boot Camp: Meeting Fundamentals," it will include the new Meeting Fundamentals course, plus a private networking reception, participation in MPI's WEC 2017 Preview Lunch, and admission to the WEC 2016 Closing Night Celebration.
"MPI recognizes there is a significant population of the workforce who may not carry the title of 'Meeting Planner' but they plan and manage meetings as an important part of their responsibilities and they are hungry for education to help them do their jobs better," said MPI President and CEO Paul Van Deventer. "We believe our new Meeting Fundamentals certificate program will not only help this audience demonstrate to management they are serious about the meeting planning aspect of their jobs, but it also validates the importance of the meeting profession with influencers outside of our industry."
The new programming comes just five months after MPI acquired Plan Your Meetings (PYM), an Atlanta-based company specializing in live education, networking events, and digital resources for non-traditional meeting planners. That company, which is now a division of MPI, will host nine "PYM LIVE" events this year for meeting and event planners. Featuring education about event technology and design trends, as well as speed-networking opportunities to meet potential vendors and destination representatives, the events will take place in:
• Chicago: April 21
• Austin, TX: May 26
• Charlotte, NC: June 21
• Raleigh, NC: June 22
• Denver: July 21
• New York: Aug. 25
• Dallas: Sept. 22
• Fort Lauderdale: Oct. 13
• Houston: Nov. 9
Admission to MPI's PYM LIVE events is complimentary for meeting and event planners.
