GMIC Annual Conference Announces New Name, New Venue

The Greening the Hospitality Industry Conference is now the Sustainable Meetings Conference, the Green Meetings Industry Council (GMIC) announced last week. Featuring the theme, "Scaling It Up," this year's conference will take place Feb. 9-11 in Denver.

GMIC said it chose Denver for its 2010 meeting in the wake of the 2008 Democratic National Convention, which took place there and was the country's greenest political convention to date.

Despite a new name and a new destination, however, the meeting's goal is the same, according to GMIC: to be the premier green meetings event for meeting planners addressing sustainability issues affecting their industry.

"The GMIC annual conference is the premier event that engages event organizers and hosts to address important sustainability issues impacting the meeting and event industry," said GMIC Board President Amy Spatrisano. "This year's conference will demonstrate the critical role of green standards development and international sustainability reporting initiatives as best practice frameworks for the meeting and event industry."

The GMIC 2010 keynote speaker will be Annie Leonard, author and host of the online film, “The Story of Stuff,” an exposé on the hidden environmental and social costs of current systems of production and consumption. The film has become an Internet phenomenon, generating more than 6.5 million views in 200 countries and territories since its December 2007 launch.
