Brussels -- The European Union has banned Indonesia's national air carrier, Garuda, and 66 other airlines from EU air space for what officials consider unsafe operations.
The latest list of banned airlines includes all 51 carriers from Indonesia; eight from Moldova; six from Bulgaria; TAAG Angola Airlines; and Volare Aviation, from Ukraine. The ban went into effect last Friday.
Garuda, which flew to Rome and Amsterdam until 2005, had planned to resume service to Amsterdam, beginning next year.
EU officials warned Europeans about flying on the banned airlines in other parts of the world. Garuda flies to various destinations in Southeast Asia as well as Australia, China, and Japan.
In March, a Garuda airplane with 140 people aboard veered off the airport runway in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and burst into flames. As a result, 21 people died.
Also in March, the EU banned 91 airlines; 74 from Africa and most of the rest from Kyrgyzstan.
