Its 2012 Annual Convention attracted a record number of attendees, Destination Marketing Association International (DMAI) announced this week. The convention, which took place July 16-18 in Seattle, hosted more than 1,300 individuals from 13 countries.
The increased interest from attendees also drove growth in exhibitor participation, according to DMAI, which said the meeting attracted 120 suppliers — up 20 percent from last year — including 33 first-time exhibitors.
The theme of this year's meeting was "Local Passion. Global Impact." As such, education content focused heavily on the relevancy, ROI, globalization and competitiveness of destination marketing organizations (DMOs).
"We looked in and out of our industry for experts offering fresh and innovative insights on today's most impactful trends and issues," said DMAI President and CEO Michael D. Gehrisch. "Enabling prospective attendees and industry thought leaders to submit proposals for potential education sessions produced not only exceptionally relevant education but also revealed critical trends impacting the destination marketing industry."
