The new international terminal at Beijing's National Airport opened on Friday, making it the world's largest airport with a colossus, dragon-shaped terminal bigger than the Pentagon and 20 percent bigger than all five terminals of London's Heathrow. The $3.75 billion terminal was built in just four years with 50,000 workers toiling around the clock in shifts. The city was eager to complete the work before the Aug. 8 start of the Olympic Games. The new terminal features a state-of-the-art baggage system and a shuttle train to carry passengers around the vast structure. The terminal has 64 restaurants, 84 retail shops, 175 escalators, 173 elevators, 437 moving sidewalks and nearly 300 check-in counters. A high-speed commuter train will carry passengers between the airport and the city in 15 minutes. The new terminal will have a capacity of 50 million passengers a year, however, capacity is expected to be stretched as 50 million passengers used the airport's existing two terminals last year.
