American Airlines Plans Massive Makeover of Admirals Club Lounges

American Airlines has commenced what it's calling "the most expansive lounge makeover in the airline's history," it announced this week.

Unfolding over the course of the next several years, the project ultimately will encompass all of American's Admirals Club lounges, of which there are currently more than 50. Renovated clubs will be updated with a new, more modern aesthetic. Key features will be new check-in podiums at the front entrance of clubs, custom-made furniture outfitted with power outlets and USB ports, refreshed restrooms, updated lighting and artwork, and, in some cases, an expanded club footprint.

"In the future, when our customers see an Admirals Club sign anywhere in the world, they'll know they'll find a reliable, modern space where they can charge their devices, grab a bite to eat, get caught up on work, or unplug from the world around them," Vice President of Global Marketing Fernand Fernandez said in a statement. "Our goal is to create spaces that are more in line with how people live and spend their time today."

The first clubs to be renovated, already under construction, are the Admirals Clubs at Phoenix Sky Harbor International (PHX) and São Paulo International (GRU) airports. Construction will commence this year on clubs in Miami, New York (JFK), Dallas/Fort Worth, and Los Angeles, with renovations to follow subsequently in Chicago, London, and "other key cities."
