Wynn Breaks Ground on Encore Resort

Las Vegas -- Wynn Resorts broke ground Friday on its second resort here, the 2,000-plus-room Encore, adjacent to its Wynn Las Vegas.

The $1.74-billion resort, which is expected to open in December 2008, will contain about 42,000 square feet of meeting space, including a 20,000-square-foot ballroom and 20 meeting rooms.

That's considerably less meeting space than the approximately 223,000 square feet of meeting space at Wynn Las Vegas. But a Wynn spokeswoman said Encore was designed to complement Wynn Las Vegas, so groups occupying guest rooms at one or both properties can also use the meeting space at either property.

The $2.7-billion Wynn Las Vegas contains 2,716 guest rooms, a casino, shops, restaurants, and an 18-hole golf course.

The new resort is being built on the site of the original Desert Inn, long a landmark property on the Las Vegas Strip before hotelier Steve Wynn tore it down to make way for his new resorts. Wynn Resorts acquired the property in 2000 as part of 240 acres the company owns here.
