Marriott Unveils European Courtyard Brand Prototype

Paris -- Marriott International yesterday unveiled the prototype of its Courtyard brand in Europe with the opening of a 150-room Courtyard Hotel here.

Aimed primarily at business travelers, the Paris Courtyard by Marriott Colombes is the first of approximately 50 Courtyard hotels that Marriott plans to open in Europe over the next five years. Currently, there are 43 Courtyard hotels in Europe, including the United Kingdom & Ireland.

"We continue to see enormous potential for our Courtyard brand in Europe," said Jean-Marc Grosfort, Marriott's regional vice president of development.

Grosfort said the business travel climate in Europe at present is similar to what Marriott experienced in the United States in the mid-1980s, when the company first introduced its Courtyard brand.

Each new Courtyard hotel in Europe will contain about 150 guest rooms. The rooms are planned to be furnished with large desks and ergonomic chairs, and high-speed Internet access.

The new Courtyards will feature contemporary, open lobbies as their signature. Intended to create an informal ambience, each lobby will contain a lounge, three-meal restaurant, 24-hour mini-market, and meeting space in flexible configurations. Each property will also contain a fitness room and a business lounge.

He said that Marriott expected to develop these hotels in conjunction with local investors on both a management contract or franchise basis. Specific sites will include stand-alone locations or mixed-use developments in city centers and close-in suburban areas.
