Sustainability in the hospitality industry used to be a buzzword. Today, however, it's a business strategy. Case in point: Marriott International, which this month published its 2014 Sustainability Report, sharing its progress toward companywide environmental goals and objectives.
Since 2007, Marriott has achieved a nearly 13 percent decrease in water usage, an 11 percent decrease in energy usage, and a 12 percent decrease in greenhouse gas emissions, it shared in the report. The company's goal is to achieve 20 percent reductions in energy and water usage by 2020.
"Our sustainability strategy is critical to the growth and success of our communities, our company, and our efforts to help protect our planet's natural resources," Marriott International President and CEO Arne Sorenson said in a statement.
In addition to its environmental progress, the report also highlights the company's other corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts, including initiatives in the areas of stakeholder engagement and policy advocacy, business ethics and human rights, responsible sourcing, and workforce development.
