Marriott, Nickelodeon to Launch Family-Focused Hotel Brand

Washington -- Marriott International and the children's entertainment television channel, Nickelodeon, are teaming up to launch a chain of family-oriented hotels.

Named Nickelodeon Resorts by Marriott, the chain is also targeting meeting attendees, whose families often accompany them to conventions for vacations before or after the event, according to Bill Marriott, chairman and chief executive of Marriott International.

"As younger boomers and Gen Xers enter prime child-rearing years, their clear preference for seamlessly mixing business with leisure and family fun will mesh perfectly with the Nickelodeon Resorts by Marriott concept," Marriott said yesterday in announcing the new brand.

Construction of the first resort, a 650-room hotel featuring a 100,000-square-foot water park and activity deck, is expected to break ground next January in San Diego and open in early 2010, according to Marriott.

About 20 hotels are expected to be under construction by 2020, with locations being considered across the globe, including North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia, said Marriott.

The resorts are being developed in partnership with Miller Global Properties, an international real estate investment and development company. Nickelodeon is a unit of Viacom International.
