Despite HQ Hiccup, Fort Worth Inventory Is Expanding

The final agreement between the City of Fort Worth and Omni Hotels & Resorts to develop a convention center hotel adjacent to the 282,000-square-foot Fort Worth Convention Center is, at press time, still missing some crossed t's and dotted i's. Finalization, however, is expected this month.

The agreement calls for a $90 million, 600-room Texas-themed property, with 48,000 square feet of meeting space, two restaurants, a ballroom, and other amenities. The plan has the hotel opening in late 2007.

But a question remains as to whether the property will feature a luxury condominium component. That will determine its ultimate design.

"Our No. 1 issue is getting the convention hotel resolved," said Douglas Harman, CEO of the Fort Worth CVB. "We have a significant number of groups that are just waiting for the announcement before making their commitment."

Despite the lengthening process of getting a HQ facility, hotel development is moving forward elsewhere. This year will see the opening of the 150-suite Residence Inn by Marriott Fort Worth Cultural District, and the 102-room AmeriSuites Historic Stockyards Hotel.

Last year, the 504-room Renaissance Worthington completed an $8 million renovation, and this year the 203-room Courtyard by Marriott Blackstone and the Radisson Plaza Hotel Fort Worth are expected to complete multimillion-dollar renovations.

However, recent studies recommend that 800 more rooms could be added to the city's downtown inventory.
