Carlson Hotels Worldwide has launched a comprehensive new "green guide" for hotel operators as part of a global initiative to develop responsible programs, policies and partnerships across its five brands, including Regent, Radisson, Park Plaza, Country Inns & Suites and Park Inn.Titled "Practical Guide to Greening Your Hotel," the guide was announced this week at the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) Fall Conference in New York. It includes tips to help hotels implement environmentally responsible practices as part of their ongoing operations."Carlson Hotels is focusing on specific issues such as reducing, recycling and reusing solid waste, reducing the use of harmful chemicals, conserving energy and water, and improving indoor air quality that can have immediate impact on the environment and the communities where our hotels operate," Carmen Baker, Carlson's vice president of responsible business, said in a statement. "As we look at all facets of our organization, this educational tool provides the information our hotels need to enhance their efforts and employ additional actionable opportunities."According to a survey conducted by Carlson Hotels:• Guests say they are "very engaged" in environmental issues.• Fifty-eight percent of guests say they would be willing to book a hotel room that is environmentally friendly.• Guests are willing to "do their part" at home and while on the road.• Fifty-six percent of guests actively seek out environmentally friendly products and services.• Fifty-two percent of guests are willing to participate in programs to help hotels offset their carbon emissions.• Guests value choice—the choice to have their linens and towels changed or not—when it comes to changing their behaviors."Travelers increasingly recognize the value of patronizing environmentally friendly hotels and many are modifying their travel habits," Baker continued. "According to a 2008 Deloitte survey, more than one-third of travelers are keenly concerned about 'green' travel. Carlson is committed to addressing this issue as a cornerstone of its responsible business practices."Along with its green guide, Carlson has launched a pilot program at select properties in which it is performing environmental audits and research. According to the hotelier, the audits provide a "comprehensive baseline" of a property's efficiency, energy consumption and carbon footprint, which property managers can then use to make feasible environmental improvements.TagsHotels and Resorts
