New Venues and Attractions in Austin, Texas 2019

The Austin city council is contemplating changes to the convention center.

Now that the Lone Star State has twin 1,000-room hotels near the Austin Convention Center -- the year-old Fairmont Austin Hotel and the JW Marriott Austin -- city planners are turning their attention to the facility itself, and its 247,052 square feet of meeting space. A study from the University of Texas on the downtown convention district was presented to the city council on April 2, recommending several options for growing the center and the district. No plan or timeline is in place yet.

And that's not the only change in Austin. This hip and artsy Texas destination has plenty to offer for groups of all sizes.

Closed in November 2017 for an extensive remodeling, the Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa reopened May 5. More than $150 million was spent to add:

  • 181 guest rooms, bringing the property's total to 493
  • A new clubhouse was built to serve the four top-notch golf courses
  • A new spa
  • Seven dining spots
  • An event pavilion
  • Anew conference center
  • A tennis complex

The poolscape was also revitalized. The resort now offers 76,000 square feet of meeting space.

The boutique 75-room East Austin Hotel debuted in April with three food-and-beverage outlets, including a pool bar.
