Winston-Salem Plans Convention Center Renovation

The Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem, NC, will commence a multi-million dollar renovation in January, the city's destination marketing organization, Visit Winston-Salem, reported this week.

Led by Atlanta-based architectural and design firm tvsdesign, the renovation will include "significant structural, design, and technological upgrades," according to Visit Winston-Salem, which said highlights will include more open, flexible meeting space, an expanded front façade that will provide more pre-function space, and the addition of more windows and skylights.

"Having tvsdesign, a recognized leader for designing world-class convention centers worldwide, lead this project will establish the Benton Convention Center as a first-class convention facility in the Southeast," said Richard Geiger, president of Visit Winston-Salem. "This renovation project enables Winston-Salem to connect the activity taking place in our downtown with the experience our planners and attendees desire. This redesign, along with the more than $1 billion spent on downtown development initiatives in the last 15 years, will attract more events to Winston-Salem and ensure existing clients return and grow with us."

The Benton Convention Center will remain open during construction, which is scheduled for completion in May 2017.
