VISIT DENVER Becomes World's First APEX-Certified CVB

VISIT DENVER, the Mile High City’s convention and visitors bureau, has become the first destination marketing organization (DMO) in the world to be certified in one of nine international sustainability standards published last year by ASTM International and the Convention Industry Council’s (CIC) Accepted Practices Exchange (APEX), it announced last week.

The organization achieved Level One certification in ASTM E2741, the APEX standard for the evaluation and selection of sustainable meeting destinations.

In December, the Colorado Convention Center likewise became the first convention center to be certified in ASTM E2774, the APEX standard for green meeting venues, while Image Audiovisuals — the convention center’s onsite preferred AV supplier — became the first company to be certified in ASTM E2745, the APEX standard for sustainable AV.

“This certification reinforces the city’s commitment and leadership role as a sustainable conference destination,” says VISIT DENVER President and CEO Richard Scharf. “Coming on the heels of the Colorado Convention Center’s certification as the first environmentally sustainable meeting venue, this is further recognition of the event industry’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact.”

The APEX initiative was launched in 2007 by CIC, which set out to create industry standards for environmentally sustainable events. Officially sanctioned by ASTM International — formerly the American Society for Testing and Materials — the completed standards include nine individual topic areas: Accommodations, Audio/Visual, Communication, Exhibits, Food and Beverage, On-Site Office, Destinations, Meeting Venue and Transportation.

The completed standards were published last year as both electronic and paper documents, and are now being turned into certifications by the Green Meetings Industry Council (GMIC) in partnership with iCompli, a nonprofit international auditing organization that certified VISIT DENVER’s compliance with the APEX destination standard.

Says Jerry Tinianow, Chief Sustainability Officer for the City and County of Denver, “This distinction reinforces the city’s commitment to sustainable practices, and we are honored to be the first destination, convention center and audiovisual company to achieve this new standard.”
