Next year, Thompson Hotels will do what few other major hotel brands have done: It will open a new hotel in downtown Playa del Carmen, Mexico, parent company Commune Hotels & Resorts announced this week.
Although Playa del Carmen is home to many local shops, restaurants and clubs, hotels traditionally have been located outside the city, in Riviera Maya and Cancún. When it opens in 2015, Thompson Playa del Carmen will buck that trend by offering 125 guest rooms in the heart of town, at the corner of 5th Avenue — a 2-mile stretch of shopping and entertainment that is said to be Mexico’s second most trafficked pedestrian street — and Quinta Avenida.
The beachfront hotel will be part of a larger development spearheaded by real estate developer Thor Urbana, whose design totals 300,000 square feet and will include international retail, cafés and restaurants.
Along with its location, the hotel’s highlight will be a 30,000-square-foot rooftop with an infinity pool.
“This project is a powerful combination of luxury hotel, sophisticated nightlife, and well-curated retail and dining in the most privileged location in downtown Playa del Carmen,” Commune Hotels & Resorts CEO Niki Leondakis said in a statement. “This deal marks our ongoing expansion into resort areas and the growing presence of Thompson-branded lifestyle hotels in Mexico and throughout Latin America. We are honored to partner with Thor Urbana to bring a fresh, innovative concept to Playa del Carmen that will be compelling to locals and visitors alike.”
