The 10 Best U.S. Cities for Travel Taxes

Happy tax day! Last fall the Global Business Traver Association crunched the numbers and came up with this list of the 10 U.S. cities with the lowest tax burden per day for travelers. The analysis looks at discriminatory travel taxes and fees enacted on travel-related services, which impose an average increase of 57 percent above general sales tax. We've also included some stories to help you plan in these destinations.

1. Fort Lauderdale, FL
Beachy Fort Lauderdale is a safe bet all around with a tax burden of $22.21 per day.

2. Fort Myers, FL
Fort Myers tied its neighbors in Southern Florida for first place, with an average $22.21 in taxes for travelers.

3. West Palm Beach, FL
Running at $22.21 per day, West Palm Beach's low tax burden means you can fit snorkeling on Singer Island into the budget.

4. Detroit, MI
The Motor City is rocking with an average tax burden of only $22.37 per day.

5. Portland, OR
The new capital of cool boasts a surprisingly low average of $22.45 in travel taxes per day.

6. Orange County, CA
It may be the original breeding ground for the "Real Housewives" franchise, but Orange County is downright affordable with a tax burden of $22.79.

7. Burbank, CA
Hollywood it isn't, but it's close! Burbank stands out with a rate of $23.74 per day.

8. Ontario, CA
With a convention center, an airport, and a low tax burden -- just $24.08 per day -- Ontario is a gem.

9. Honolulu, HI
Say aloha to taxes in paradise. Travelers can expect to pay an average of only $24.38 in discriminatory travel taxes in Honolulu.

10. Orlando, FL
$24.50 or so is a small price to pay in Central Florida's meetings powerhouse.
