Security at Meetings Alarmingly Lax

In the latest MiMegasite.com poll, more than 40 percent planners say they never, or only sometimes, take security precautions at their meetings beyond simply checking name badges as attendees enter the meeting space. Further, 59 percent of respondents said that they often or always take security precautions beyond simply checking badges, in order to keep attendees safe as well as any proprietary information being disseminated at a meeting.

With hotels, convention centers, and other meeting venues being easily accessible to the general public, the number of planners who say they do not use stricter security measures is indeed surprising. In the financial and pharmaceutical industries, security tends to be a higher priority because of the concern about corporate espionage.

Planners should work with the convention services and secruity departments at a venue to see which precautions can be taken to ensure that only registered meeting attendees are able to access not only the meeting space, but also any information and related materials disseminated at the meeting.
