To replace David Pekinpaugh, who recently announced his resignation effective June 30, 2009, the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau has named Joe Terzi its interim president and CEO. A former senior vice president at Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, he retired on Jan. 1, 2009, but previously served for 12 years on the San Diego CVB's board of directors, of which he was chairman in 2004.
"I'm tremendously excited about promoting San Diego as a destination for leisure and business travelers throughout the United States and overseas," Terzi said in a statement last week.
Because of his prominent position within San Diego's hotel industry, Terzi is the ideal person for the job, according to the CVB's board chairman, Jim Oddo.
"We know that Joe Terzi will excel in this position based on his distinguished career with Sheraton and Starwood Hotels," he said. "We are very thankful for the marvelous work of David Peckinpaugh during his three years at the helm of [the CVB], and while these are challenging times for tourism everywhere, we are confident that Joe will ably lead us through this transition."
Although the CVB has named Terzi its interim CEO, it did not immediately indicate how long he would serve or when the search for Peckinpaugh's permanent replacement would begin.
