San Antonio Alamodome Commences $43 Million Renovation

San Antonio Alamodome

San Antonio's 23-year-old stadium, the 65,000-seat Alamodome, is embarking on a $43 million makeover, the San Antonio Convention & Visitors Bureau reported this month.

"The Alamodome will undergo the most significant capital improvement program in its 23-year history," said Michael Sawaya, executive director of convention and sports facilities for the City of San Antonio. "Improvements to the Alamodome will modernize the venue, allowing it to be more competitive with other stadiums around the country, and attract high profile national events to San Antonio."

Scheduled for completion in November 2017, the renovation will include: a transformation of the stadium's outdoor North Plaza, which will add more contiguous outdoor event space; an 18,600-square-foot expansion of the stadium's East and West Concourse, which will be enhanced with new concessions and a new terrace club; the addition of a new 24,000-square-foot multi-use space; the incorporation of new technology, including two new LED video walls and ribbon boards; and a new locker room for visiting teams.

"Aside from benefiting San Antonio's overall meetings package, the Alamodome enhancements are vital to maintaining and growing San Antonio's ability to host sporting events such as the Valero Alamo Bowl and U.S. Army All American Bowl," said San Antonio Convention & Visitors Bureau Executive Director Casandra Matej. "One of the first events to utilize the revitalized Alamodome will be the NCAA Final Four in 2018."

The Alamodome renovations are only the latest improvements to meetings infrastructure in San Antonio. The city also has expanded its historic River Walk, and will debut an expansion of the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in January 2016.
