A new casino-hotel, the five-story, 80-room Riverwalk Casino and Hotel, has opened in Vicksburg, Miss., west of Jackson. The $100 million hotel, which debuted last week, features 25,000 square feet of gaming space, two restaurants and a large meeting and events center.
"This casino is going to be crucial in regard to where the Vicksburg market goes from here," Mississippi Gaming Commission Executive Director Larry Gregory told local paper The Vicksburg Post
. "Right now you're not going to see any new developments because the economy is so tight, but any potential developers in the future are going to look at Riverwalk to see if they were able to grow the Vicksburg market."
The Riverwalk is Vicksburg's fifth casino, and the first to open there in 14 years. It's also the first to be built on land, as the city's other gaming venues are located inside riverboats and on barges.
"You just can't find a better property on the market right now than this," Gregory continued. "This is an absolutely beautiful property and I am so proud Vicksburg is getting a casino of this caliber."
While the size of its meeting facilities hasn't been announced, Riverwalk's 24-hour casino features 805 slot machines and 18 gaming tables.
