RIU Hotels & Resorts has opened a new convention center, the RIU Playacar Convention Center, in Playa del Carmen, a resort city just south of Cancún in Mexico's Riviera Maya tourism district, it announced this week.
The convention center, which is the first of its kind in Playa del Carmen, will service meeting and incentive groups staying at the area's six RIU hotels — Riu Palace Mexico, Riu Palace Riviera Maya, Riu Playacar, Riu Yucatan, Riu Tequila and Riu Lupita — which offer a total of 2,700 all-inclusive guest rooms.
"The commitment of the hotel chain in the Riviera Maya is stronger than ever and this latest investment demonstrates it," said RIU spokesperson Maria Jose Rincon. "This time we are not opening a hotel, but the RIU Playacar Convention Center, with which we want to support the efforts of this wonderful destination in order to help its growth and diversify the services offered to tourism."
Officially opened on July 22, the RIU Playacar Convention Center offers approximately 8,070 square feet of meeting space that's divisible into five separate meeting rooms. It can accommodate up to 600 people for banquet-style events.
