A new events center in Bettendorf, Iowa, finally has a name. Formerly known only as the Bettendorf Event Center, the new facility will be called the Quad-Cities Waterfront Convention Center when it opens in January 2009.
The name, which was approved last month by the Bettendorf City Council, is a compromise between the city and the convention center's adjoining hotel-casino, the Isle of Capri. The former wanted to include "waterfront" in the event center name for branding purposes while hotel officials wanted "Quad-Cities" in order to play into broader regional marketing efforts.
"We've reached a name that's palatable, reputable, marketable," Bettendorf Mayor Mike Freemire said, according to local news reports. "It truly does encompass what this is about. It's about a place in the Quad-Cities—a premiere place—and it also is connected to the waterfront, so I think it makes a lot of sense."
When it opens, the $19.1 million Quad-Cities Waterfront Convention Center will feature 50,000 square feet of meeting and event space that connects to the 514-room Isle of Capri—Iowa's largest hotel complex—via skywalk. The space will include four breakout rooms and a 15,500-square-foot event hall for up to 1,800 attendees.
A grand opening for the Quad-Cities Waterfront Convention Center is currently scheduled for Jan. 24.
