PCMA Citywide Auction Features San Diego

A citywide convention is a massive affair — and a massive expense. However, meeting professionals now have the opportunity to plan one at a steal thanks to the fifth annual PCMA Citywide Auction, featuring the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau and the San Diego Convention Center, the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) announced last week.

Currently underway, the auction is designed to raise money for high-level meetings industry education by selling to the highest bidder a citywide meeting package in a major U.S. city. Past auctions have featured packages in Orlando, Chicago, New Orleans and Washington, D.C. This year's package in San Diego includes space at the San Diego Convention Center — for a meeting to be held between now and the end of 2019, with a peak room night of at least 1,500 — and a complimentary board dinner for up to 15 people.

"San Diego is a premier convention destination and was the most recent host for our record-attendance Convening Leaders annual meeting," said PCMA President and CEO Deborah Sexton. "Their participation in the Citywide Auction further demonstrates their continued commitment to our industry. In partnering with PCMA, San Diego will be showcasing their beautiful southern California city and their state-of-the-art convention center on the harbor. The Citywide Auction offers planners an incredible deal, in a first tier city, while supporting educational resources for all PCMA members and our industry."

Bidding on this year's package starts at $150,000. The auction will remain open until Nov. 30 at 5 p.m. CST — unless a bidder utilizes the "Buy It Now!" option for $190,000, in which case the auction will be immediately closed.

"San Diego is proud to support PCMA and the incredible work they do year-round for the meetings industry through their educational programs," said Joe Terzi, president and CEO of the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau. "Our community was thrilled to host PCMA's 2012 Convening Leaders annual meeting in January, which drew record breaking attendance, and we look forward to working with the top bidder of the Citywide Auction for another memorable and successful event in our top-ranked convention center and destination."
