New W Hotel Preps for April Opening in Fort Lauderdale

Originally scheduled for completion in December 2006, a new W Hotel will open two years behind schedule on April 2 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. According to Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, it will have 517 guest rooms and 18,000 square feet of meeting space.

Located on four-and-a-half acres on Fort Lauderdale Beach, the W Fort Lauderdale will be the first W hotel in South Florida. The second, the W South Beach in Miami, is scheduled to open in May.

"With Fort Lauderdale in the midst of such an extraordinary renaissance, we are excited about opening what will certainly become a landmark destination in this world-class city," former Starwood Chairman and CEO Barry S. Sternlicht said in a 2003 statement, upon announcing the new hotel. "The W Fort Lauderdale will be a welcome addition to South Florida's upscale hotel marketplace."

In total, the W Fort Lauderdale will have 11 meeting spaces, the largest of which—a 4,264-square-foot ballroom indoors, and a 5,568-square-foot courtyard outdoors—will be able to accommodate up to 470 and 600 attendees, respectively.

In addition to meeting space, the W Fort Lauderdale will feature a 4,000-square-foot spa, an on-site restaurant and a state-of-the-art fitness center.
