New Marriott Planned for Downtown Akron

A new Courtyard by Marriott hotel will soon open in downtown Akron, Ohio, where it will be the first new hotel in 30 years, the City of Akron announced last month.

Being built by local developer the Testa Companies as part of Northside Lofts, a residential development that's currently under construction in downtown Akron, the new hotel will cost $16 million to build and will feature 120 guest rooms inside a 10-story tower. Amenities will include a three-story underground parking garage, an onsite restaurant, a swimming pool, a spa and fitness center, and a private high-definition theater with stadium seating for 18 that will show movies for hotel guests and be available for rent by groups.

"A new, modern hotel is crucial to downtown's continued economic development," said Testa Companies Chief Operating Officer Joel Testa. "With a perfect site already under control and ready for construction, we investigated numerous brands to find the right fit with the diversity and sophistication of Northside Lofts. Marriott Courtyard will fit perfectly."

Construction on the new hotel could begin as early as this winter, according to the city, with completion possible before spring 2012.
