New Intermodal Transportation System to Launch This Fall at Rhode Island Airport

A new intermodal transportation system connecting planes, trains, buses and cars will debut in September at T.F. Green Airport in Providence, R.I., according to the Rhode Island Airport Corporation (RIAC).

Known as InterLink — a name that was submitted by marketing majors at Bryant University as part of a contest sponsored by RIAC — the new facility will utilize Amtrak rails to serve commuter trains traveling between Warwick, Providence and Boston.

Nearly 20 years in the making, the $267 million project also will encompass a consolidated rental car facility housing all airport rental car operations, as well as a 1,200-foot elevated and enclosed walkway with moving sidewalks that will connect passengers to and from the airport terminal. In addition, it will include opportunities for connections to local and intercity bus service.

According to RIAC, construction alone of the new facility was expected to generate $127 million in annual economic impact.
