Work has commenced on a $60 million renovation of the Monterey Conference Center in Monterey, CA, the City of Monterey announced last week.
Scheduled for completion in late 2016, with a projected re-opening in early 2017, the project will see the building completely gutted in order to accommodate a new, reconfigured interior with more than 40,000 square feet of meeting space. The city said the new and improved venue will "offer more flexible meeting space, more usable pre-function space, advanced technology, and the ability to host multiple meetings simultaneously in a LEED-certified building."
"This is the largest capital improvement project in the city's history," said Assistant City Manager Hans Uslar. "It is at the center of our plans to revitalize the downtown and to ensure the city's future economic success."
Added Tammy Blount, president and CEO of the Monterey County Convention & Visitors Bureau, "Our customers have shared their excitement at the construction getting underway, bringing the completion of the renovation of the Monterey Conference Center ever-closer. Monterey's scenic beauty and unique characteristics provide inspiration and enhance the desire of meeting planners to book their conferences in our extraordinary destination. This renovation will provide the advanced facility sought by meeting planners to complement their memorable meeting and destination experience."
