Wisconsin's Monona Terrace Achieves LEED Gold Rating

Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center in Madison, WI, has received LEED-EB: O&M Gold certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design - Existing Building: Operations & Maintenance) from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), it announced this week.

Famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright -- a Wisconsin native -- began designing Monona Terrace in 1938, and didn't complete its plans until 1958, just weeks before his death. In 1992, Madison residents voted to finally build the facility, which utilized Wright's design for its exterior, but a new interior by Wright's apprentice, Tony Puttnam. Construction began in 1994, and the convention center finally opened in 1997. Ten years later, in 2007, the facility became the first convention center in the nation to earn LEED-EB Silver certification. According to the venue, being recertified this year at the LEED Gold level will help it distinguish itself among groups organizing green meetings and conventions.

"Monona Terrace has successfully embraced LEED-EB: O&M as a management tool as opposed to just a certification system," said Bill Rattunde, senior project manager at Leonardo Academy, a firm of nonprofit sustainability consultants engaged by Monona Terrace to offer guidance and support in pursuit of its LEED Gold certification. "The result is that they are driving continuous improvements in their operations that positively impact their environmental footprint, indoor human environment, and bottom line."

Monona Terrace received its LEED certification for achievements in the areas of: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. Among its accomplishments:

• Monona Terrace has an energy use rating 27 percent below similar facilities across the nation.
• Monona Terrace has reduced water use to 46 percent below the LEED benchmark.
• Monona Terrace has purchased green energy offsetting 100 percent of electric power consumption and non-electric carbon emissions.
• Monona Terrace has converted from fluorescent and metal halide lighting to LED technology.
• Monona Terrace recycled 2,533 lbs. of electronic equipment.
• Monona Terrace has partnered with UW Madison We Conserve to compost over 20 tons of pre-consumer, organic kitchen waste.
• Monona Terrace has donated approximately 8,000 lbs. of food to charity each year.

Concluded Monona Terrace Executive Director Gregg McManners, "We believe that the certification supports the efforts of the city and the county to be efficient with our natural resources. We want to be a leader in energy and materials use and to support our area's reputation of being a sustainable place to live, work, and play."
