A Marriott Renaissance Hotel planned for downtown Birmingham, Ala., is finally coming into focus as developer Harbert Realty Services completes work on the initial design phase of the project, reports The Birmingham News. At an estimated cost of over $50 million, the new hotel will offer 261 rooms and ample meeting space.Located in the 18-story building that was once headquarters for Regions Financial Corp., the new Birmingham Renaissance will appeal to luxury-minded travelers—both business and leisure—throughout the South. That's because it will feature not only standard guest rooms, but also two massive suites—a 1,448-square-foot presidential suite and a 1,238-square-foot governor's suite—on the top floor of the former office building. Also on the top floor of the hotel will be a 2,100-square-foot Marriott Club Lounge. Far below that, the lobby will feature a 1,357-square-foot Starbucks with seating for 120 and a 3,282-square-foot lounge. The second floor, meanwhile, will feature a 5,021-square-foot ballroom that will be able to accommodate events for as many as 717 people. The third floor will be almost entirely devoted to meeting rooms and the fourth to a high-end fitness club.Harry Lynch, CEO of Harbert Realty, says he expects construction on the hotel to be underway by late September and complete by late 2009.
