Lancaster County Convention Center, Hotel Open in Pennsylvania

After 10 years of local debate and several months of construction delays, the new Lancaster County Convention Center and Lancaster Marriott on Penn Square have finally opened in Lancaster, Pa.

The $177.6 million convention center and hotel, which include 220,000 square feet of meeting space and 300 guest rooms, were celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony last Thursday and will host their first major event—the Pennsylvania League of Cities and Municipalities' 110th annual convention—this week.

"It will attract a different demographic group," Lancaster Mayor Rick Gray told local news Web site LancasterOnline.com. "It will attract people that want a top-notch hotel. There is no facility like it in the country, or in the mid-state, for that matter."

The new convention center, which can host meetings of up to 6,000 people, is the most expensive building project ever in Lancaster, which previously could not host meetings larger than 250.
