Ground has broken on the first new hotel in Jekyll Island, Ga., in 36 years. The hotel, a 138-room Hampton Inn and Suites, replaces what was previously the area's youngest hotel—a Holiday Inn that was built in 1972 and torn down in 2006.Scheduled to open in July 2009, the new Hampton Inn hotel will be located beside the beach on the state-owned barrier island, which is situated on the Georgia coast south of Savannah, Ga., and north of Jacksonville, Fla. It's the first of three phases in a larger, $75 million project, the result of which will be a resort known as Jekyll Island Club Beach Village. Phase two will see the construction of a conference center, a restaurant and an 88-room boutique hotel. Phase three, meanwhile, will add a 66-room condo-style hotel for long-term stays. All three phases of the project are on track for completion in January 2010.
