Houston to Welcome 2,000 New Hotel Rooms by 2016

Thanks to six new properties currently in development, Houston’s downtown convention district will add 2,000 new hotel rooms by 2016, the Greater Houston Convention & Visitors Bureau reported this week.

The new hotels include a Marriott Marquis with 1,000 guest rooms and 100,000 square feet of meeting space, opening in Spring 2016; a Hampton Inn/Homewood Suites with 300 guest rooms and 6,000 square feet of meeting space, opening in September 2015; a Hyatt Place with 261 guest rooms, opening in summer 2015; a JW Marriott with 323 guest rooms and 10,000 square feet of meeting space, opening in spring 2014; and a SpringHill Suites with 166 guest rooms opening in mid-2015.

The hotels — all located within blocks of the George R. Brown Convention Center — are expected to help Houston compete for more citywide conventions.

“These new properties will give Houston the opportunity to host a significant number of conventions that we couldn’t before, due to lack of hotel inventory,” says Greg Ortale, president and CEO of the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We can now compete for any piece of business. This city has so much to offer.”
