Georgia Aquarium Breaks Ground on Building Improvement Project - 2006-11-08

The Georgia Aquarium broke ground in October on a building improvement project that will expand the Oceans Ballroom and reinvest more than $13 million in the facility. The Aquarium is currently a 550,000 square-foot facility; after improvements are made, the building will increase its space to more than 580,000 square feet.

A 7,000+ square-foot expansion to the Ocean Ballroom’s pre-function space will create an elegant entrance from Ivan Allen Boulevard to the ballroom. Additionally, green rooms, coat checks and meeting/conference rooms will be expanded and upgraded. The Oceans Ballroom has become one of the most popular and sought-after event locations in Atlanta, hosting more than 700 events in the first year. Guests of Oceans Ballroom are treated to views into the whale shark and beluga whale habitats and exquisite cuisine by Wolfgang Puck Catering.

Swanagan explained that the improvements will be made with minimal disturbance to guests and animals, with many of the upgrades rolling out over the next few months.
